Unemployment in June was 3.6 percent, seasonally adjusted. That's up from May's 3.4 percent even though 63,300 more workers found jobs in June than in May. That's because another 17,300 - almost one-third more than normal - were unemployed.
Wisconsin's 3.6 percent unemployment compares with the nation's 5.0, which is also up two-tenths of a percentage point from May.
For the month of June, the total number of jobs has never been higher. In fact, those job numbers are at all-time record highs, when you adjust for the season. The same is true for manufacturing jobs, which are among the highest-paying, on average ($623 a week, second quarter, 1996).
Comparing June 1997 with June 1996, employers showed an additional 48,200 jobs on their payrolls. Of all the nation's 276 metropolitan areas, Madison once again had the lowest unemployment in May, the most recent month available. Sheboygan had the 20th lowest; La Crosse was 27th. Among the states, Wisconsin's unemployment was 9th lowest in May.
