JANUARY LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED
MADISON –
Unemployment followed normal seasonal patterns across Wisconsin in
January as most counties experienced increases in rates over December
2002, according to figures released today by the Department of Workforce
Development.
"There is a
seasonal nature of January local unemployment rates and the fact that
most counties had lower rates than they did one year ago is
encouraging," said DWD Secretary Roberta Gassman. "However,
many Wisconsin residents continue to struggle with a difficult job
market and to that end, the Department of Workforce Development will
continue providing the services and resources they need to regain
employment."
Unemployment rates in
all but one of Wisconsin’s 72 counties followed normal seasonal
patterns by increasing. Florence County was the only county in the state
that reported a lower January unemployment rate than in December while
the unemployment rate in Menominee County was unchanged over the month.
The majority of
counties in the state, 42 in total, had a lower unemployment rate in
January 2003 than for the same month in 2002. The greatest decrease in
unemployment rate over the twelve-month period occurred in Ashland
County with a reduction of 2.0 percentage points, while Lafayette and
St. Croix Counties experienced the largest increase from January 2002 of
1.2 percentage points.
Fifty-seven of the
state's 72 counties reported a preliminary January unemployment rate of
6.0 percent or higher. Marquette and Juneau Counties both show the
highest unemployment rates at 11.2 percent. Dane County had the state's
lowest unemployment rate, 3.0 percent, and is the only county in the
state to report a rate under 4.0 percent. Ozaukee and Waukesha Counties
followed closely at 4.2 and 4.8 percent, respectively. The statewide
unemployment rate was 6.3 percent and the national rate was 6.5 percent,
both are not seasonally adjusted.
Increases in the
unemployment rate are typical in the month of January and are indicative
of seasonal changes in nature. January usually shows the largest monthly
job decrease of the year as many industries, especially retail trade,
reduce employment following the holiday season. And, as winter increases
its grip on the state, construction employment continues to decline.
