Used this site before? PLEASE NOTE: it now uses a different search engine, causing significant changes in the way queries must be worded. Read more about this below.

Changes in the way queries must be worded:   As a result of a change made by the Department of Workforce Development, on whose servers LIRC's website is currently maintained, LIRC has been required to shift to a different type of search engine for use on this page and on other pages at our website. Because of this, there have been significant changes in the way queries must be worded.  Here are the major differences between the old and new search engines:

Old: Multiple words were treated as a phrase

New:  Multiple words are treated as being joined by the operator AND.   For example, the query   drug test   will find documents containing the word drug and the word test.

Multiple words within quote marks are treated as a phrase.   For example, the query  "drug test"   will find documents containing the phrase   drug test .

Old: The Boolean operators AND, OR, AND NOT, and NEAR could be used to connect words or phrases.

New:  The operator AND is assumed by default to connect adjacent words or phrases.

The operator OR may still be used between adjacent words or phrases. If used, it replaces the assumed AND.

Instead of the connector AND NOT ,  use a minus sign (dash) in front of a word to exclude results containing that word.  For example:  "drug test" -misconduct   will find decisions that do include the phrase "drug test" but that do not include the word misconduct.

There is no equivalent to the operator NEAR.

Please note: if an operator word (AND, OR) is included within quote marks, it is not treated as an operator, but simply as a word. For example, the query "drug AND test" will only find documents containing the three-word phrase  drug and test

Old: An asterisk could be used as a "wild card" for any word ending (i.e.,  misc*  would find misconduct, mischief, etc.).

New: There is no longer any "wild card" capability available.

Old:  The search could be focused on the document title by prefixing the query with @DocTitle

New: The prefix to search in the document title is now  allintitle:  (note - the colon is included) For example:

To search for a decision issued on a particular date:  allintitle: "January 20 1999"

To search for LIRC UC decisions issued in January, 1998:  allintitle:  "Wis.LIRC UC Decision"  January  1998

To search for UC Court Decision summaries from Dane County:   allintitle:  "UI Court decision summary"  Dane

Please note that in these examples, the quote marks are part of the query, used to create a phrase.
